Former Union Minister Suresh Kalmadi Dies

Former Union minister Suresh Kalmadi, a prominent political figure whose career was shaped by sports administration and later marred by controversy, passed away early Tuesday morning in Pune. He was 81.

Kalmadi stepped away from public life following allegations of corruption linked to his role as chairman of the Organising Committee of the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. His arrest in 2011 and removal from influential positions effectively brought his political career to an end. In April 2025, however, a Delhi court accepted the Enforcement Directorate’s closure report in an alleged money-laundering case related to the Games, effectively clearing him of the charges.

Before entering politics, Kalmadi served as a squadron leader in the Indian Air Force and worked as an instructor at the National Defence Academy. He took voluntary retirement in the early 1970s and soon entered political life. In 1974, with the support of socialist leader Nilubhau Limaye—a close associate of his father, Shamarao Kalmadi—he acquired the Poona Coffee House, which went on to become an informal hub of political activity in the city.

The coffee house played a crucial role in building Kalmadi’s political network. Sharad Pawar, then an emerging Congress leader, recognised his organisational abilities and entrusted him with responsibilities in Pune. In 1977, Kalmadi was appointed president of the Pune Youth Congress.

He rose to national prominence during the political churn following the Emergency, notably after protesting against then Prime Minister Morarji Desai in Pune—an act that caught the attention of Congress leader Sanjay Gandhi. Kalmadi later developed close ties with both Sanjay Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.

Backed by Pawar and his proximity to the Gandhi family, Kalmadi’s political career gained momentum. When Pawar split from the Congress to form Congress (S), Kalmadi became president of its youth wing. He served three terms in the Rajya Sabha between 1982 and 1995 and returned briefly in 1998.

Kalmadi was elected to the Lok Sabha from Pune in 1996, 2004, and 2009. He served as minister of state for railways in the P.V. Narasimha Rao government between 1995 and 1996. He often spoke with pride of his role during this period, particularly the renaming of Mumbai’s Victoria Terminus as Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus.

Beyond politics, Kalmadi was deeply involved in sports administration. He headed the Maharashtra State Athletics Federation, chaired the Athletics Federation of India’s selection committee, and later became president of the Indian Olympic Association.

His efforts as an organiser helped shape Pune’s sporting and cultural landscape. The Pune International Marathon, launched in 1983, and the Pune Festival bolstered his reputation as an effective administrator. He also played a key role in Pune hosting the National Games in 1994 and the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2008.
