Trump Imposes 25% Tariff on Iran Trade Partners: What It Means for India

Amid escalating violent protests in Iran, US President Donald Trump on Monday announced that trade partners of Tehran will face a 25% tariff on “any and all business” with the United States.

The unrest in Iran has spread across all 31 provinces, with the US-based Human Rights Activist News Agency (HRANA) reporting at least 646 deaths so far. The protests have been fueled by economic distress and government crackdowns, with over 10,700 people detained in recent weeks.

Trump has repeatedly warned of military action if Iran uses deadly force against protestors, describing the situation as a “red line” being crossed. In a Truth Social post, he declared:

“Effective immediately, any country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a Tariff of 25% on any and all business being done with the United States of America. This Order is final and conclusive.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also indicated that airstrikes are among the “many, many options” being considered, though she emphasized that “diplomacy is always the first option for the president.”

Impact on India

India is among Iran’s major trade partners, alongside China, Iraq, the UAE, and Turkey. Bilateral trade between India and Iran reached US$1.68 billion in 2024-25, with India exporting $1.24 billion worth of goods, including basmati rice, tea, sugar, fruits, and pharmaceuticals, and importing $0.44 billion, primarily organic chemicals, edible fruits, nuts, and mineral fuels.

Cereals accounted for the largest share of Indian exports to Iran ($698.51 million), while organic chemicals were the biggest import ($512.92 million). Other significant trade items include coffee, tea, spices, machinery, and construction materials.

The new US tariff could compound India’s trade challenges, especially since Washington has already imposed tariffs of up to 50% on Indian goods over oil imports from Russia. The levy may also complicate ongoing negotiations for the long-awaited India-US trade deal, despite US ambassador-designate Sergio Gor emphasizing India as “no partner more essential than India.”

Trump’s tariff policy faces legal challenges in the US Supreme Court, with critics arguing that the President exceeded his authority. Trump acknowledged the potential consequences in a Truth Social post, saying, “If the US Supreme Court rules against us, we’re screwed!”

Iran Protests

The protests in Iran have intensified following economic hardship and UN sanctions related to the country’s nuclear program. The Rial has plunged, trading at over 1.4 million to the US dollar. HRANA reported that among the dead, 512 were protestors and 132 were security personnel. The Iranian government has shut down internet and telephone networks in response to the unrest.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi claimed the protests were “turned violent and bloody to give an excuse” for US intervention, though he provided no evidence.
