Why Bangladesh Players Chose Silence When Orders Were Issued

Bangladesh’s prospects of featuring in the T20 World Cup 2026 appear to be fading rapidly. On Thursday, those hopes suffered a major blow after the Bangladesh Sports Ministry directed the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and its players not to travel to India, citing security concerns. The move has all but sealed Bangladesh’s withdrawal from the tournament, with the ICC expected to issue an official statement within the next 24 hours, likely confirming Scotland as their replacement.

It is a bitter outcome—one that many believe could have been avoided. A cricket-obsessed nation, Bangladesh has consistently brought energy and competitiveness to global tournaments. That their absence may be driven by political considerations and external pressures represents a significant setback for the country’s cricketing ambitions.

Bangladesh’s participation had been under scrutiny for weeks. Tensions escalated after the BCCI asked Kolkata Knight Riders to release Mustafizur Rahman amid reports of Hindu killings in Bangladesh. Even so, when the ICC gave the BCB a 24-hour deadline to clarify its position, players remained hopeful that government backing would allow them to travel and compete.

Those hopes dimmed quickly once official orders were conveyed to the board and players. According to a PTI report, the squad remained largely silent during discussions, reluctant to voice their views due to recent events that had created a climate of fear.

The trigger, sources said, was the treatment of Tamim Iqbal—one of Bangladesh cricket’s most respected figures and arguably second only to Shakib Al Hasan in stature. Tamim was labelled an “Indian agent” by former BCB official M Nazmul Islam after he urged the board not to allow emotion to dictate its decision on touring India. While Nazmul later resigned following widespread criticism, the remark left a deep psychological impact on the players.

“During the meeting with government adviser Asif Nazrul, he did most of the talking, with occasional comments from Bulbul bhai. The players largely stayed quiet,” a source told PTI on condition of anonymity. “The senior players feel that if someone like Tamim Iqbal can be publicly disrespected, they could face even worse backlash.”

The timing could hardly be worse for Bangladesh cricket. While preparations for the T20 World Cup were expected to dominate the agenda, national elections are scheduled for February 12—just five days into the ICC tournament. According to the report, the developments have particularly distressed BCB president and former captain Aminul Islam. Bangladesh’s first-ever Test centurion, Aminul scored a historic hundred on the country’s Test debut against India in Dhaka 25 years ago and is said to be pained by the political fallout affecting the sport.

“Bulbul bhai served as the ICC’s Game Development Officer for 10 years and has strong relationships across the board,” the source added. “Yet at the final meeting, he was isolated. Apart from token support from Pakistan, there was no backing. Even Sri Lanka Cricket, which Bangladesh had hoped would support them, stayed away.”

The financial implications are severe. If Bangladesh miss the T20 World Cup, losses are estimated at around BDT 325 crore. Factoring in reduced broadcast income, sponsorships, and overall revenue, the BCB could see its financial-year earnings shrink by 60 per cent or more.
