India’s blockbuster T20 World Cup showdown against Pakistan at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday evening could be disrupted by rain. Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology has warned of a possible low-pressure system developing over the Bay of Bengal, heightening the risk of showers during the high-voltage clash.
In a statement issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre, officials noted that unstable weather conditions may take shape around the same period. “A low-pressure area is likely to form over the south-eastern Bay of Bengal around 15th February,” the department said, raising concerns about potential interruptions during the match.
AccuWeather forecasts suggest a 70–80% chance of rain in the Khettarama area of Colombo — home to the R Premadasa Stadium — through the morning and afternoon. While the probability slightly decreases later in the evening, intermittent showers could still delay the start or force a shortened contest.
However, the venue is equipped with full-ground covers, allowing play to resume quickly — often within 20 minutes — once rain stops.
Abhishek Sharma’s fitness under watch
Apart from weather concerns, India are also monitoring Abhishek Sharma’s fitness. The opener missed the Namibia match due to an infection that required a two-day hospital stay. In his absence, Sanju Samson opened alongside Ishan Kishan but managed only 22 runs despite a promising start.
Team management is closely assessing Abhishek’s recovery, with a final decision on his availability expected closer to match day, depending on medical clearance.
Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya is expected to be a key figure in the contest. The all-rounder has a strong record against Pakistan, scoring 315 runs in 12 innings at an average of 35 and a strike rate above 126, including two half-centuries. With the ball, he has claimed 25 wickets at an average of 18.60, with best figures of 3/8. India will also rely on Ishan’s aggressive approach at the top as they hope Abhishek regains full fitness in time for the marquee encounter.
