PM Modi Urges De-escalation, Condemns Energy Attacks in Talks with Global Leaders
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held discussions with leaders of Qatar, France, Jordan, Oman and Malaysia, expressing deep concern over the escalating situation in West Asia. He strongly condemned attacks on energy infrastructure and called for immediate steps to reduce tensions.
In separate conversations, Modi emphasised the importance of dialogue and diplomacy to restore peace, security and stability. He also highlighted the need to ensure safe and uninterrupted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route.
Outreach to Key Nations
Qatar:
During his call with Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Modi expressed solidarity with Qatar and condemned attacks on energy facilities. He also thanked Doha for supporting the Indian community and reiterated India’s stance on maintaining safe maritime movement in the region.
Jordan:
Speaking with Abdullah II, whom he referred to as “my brother,” Modi conveyed Eid greetings and stressed the urgency of diplomatic efforts to restore stability. He warned that attacks on energy infrastructure could escalate tensions further and appreciated Jordan’s role in assisting stranded Indians.
France:
In a conversation with Emmanuel Macron, Modi underlined the need for de-escalation and continued cooperation to promote peace. Macron echoed the sentiment, noting that India and France are working closely to keep diplomacy at the forefront.
Oman:
Modi described his discussion with Haitham bin Tariq as productive, with both leaders agreeing on prioritising dialogue to ease tensions. He also reaffirmed India’s support for Oman’s sovereignty and praised its efforts in helping evacuate people, including Indians.
Malaysia:
During his call with Anwar Ibrahim, Modi extended festive greetings and reaffirmed a shared commitment to resolving the crisis through peaceful means.
Rising Tensions in West Asia
The outreach comes amid intensifying conflict in the region. Iran has increased strikes on oil and gas facilities following an Israeli attack on the South Pars gas field—its primary energy source.
US President Donald Trump warned of severe retaliation if Iran continues its actions, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Iran would no longer be allowed to advance its nuclear and missile capabilities.
As tensions rise, India has called for restraint, stressing that attacks on energy infrastructure are unacceptable and could trigger wider instability in global markets.
