The Delhi Police has been placed on high alert as several Hindu organisations prepare to take out processions on Thursday in Uttam Nagar and Jahangirpuri to mark Hanuman Jayanti.
Heavy security deployment has been put in place in both areas to maintain law and order, a senior police officer said.
In Uttam Nagar, the heightened vigilance comes in the wake of tensions following the March 4 murder of a 26-year-old man after a clash between his family and neighbours in JJ Colony during Holi celebrations. The incident had escalated into violence, with mobs vandalising vehicles and setting some on fire, prompting a week-long heavy police presence. The dispute reportedly began after water from a balloon thrown by a girl from one family splashed on a woman from a neighbouring household. So far, 16 people, including two minors, have been arrested or apprehended.
Ahead of Hanuman Jayanti, Delhi Police also conducted flag marches and bike patrols across the northwest district as part of intensified security measures.
In Jahangirpuri, officials held an Aman Committee meeting to ensure communal harmony, keeping in mind the violence that took place during a Hanuman Jayanti procession in 2022, when several people, including police personnel, were injured in incidents of stone-pelting and arson.
Police said surveillance has been stepped up using CCTV cameras, drones, and local intelligence inputs. Barricades have been installed at key locations, while area domination exercises and flag marches are being carried out to reassure residents. The large-scale operation, covering major roads and sensitive areas, is aimed at strengthening security and boosting public confidence in the lead-up to the festival.
