BJP dominates 2026 civic polls, wins 1,425 seats in 29 municipal corporations

The BJP registered a sweeping victory in the 2026 civic polls, winning 1,425 of the 2,869 seats across 29 municipal corporations and wresting control of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) from Uddhav Thackeray, bringing an end to his family’s three-decade dominance over the cash-rich civic body.

In the 227-member BMC, the BJP emerged as the single largest party with 89 seats, while its ally Shiv Sena won 29. Shiv Sena (UBT) secured 65 seats and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) six. The Congress, contesting in alliance with the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), won 24 seats. The AIMIM bagged eight seats, the NCP three, the Samajwadi Party two, and the NCP (SP) managed just one seat.

The BJP also delivered a major blow to the Pawars in Pune, winning 119 seats in the civic body. Ajit Pawar-led NCP finished a distant second with 27 seats, its ally NCP (SP) won three, while the Congress secured 15 seats.

In Nagpur, the BJP dominated the 151-member municipal corporation, winning 102 seats, while the Congress managed 34. Nashik saw the BJP clinch 72 seats, followed by Shiv Sena with 26, Shiv Sena (UBT) with 15, the Congress with three and the NCP with four.

The party’s strong performance continued in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, where it won 57 seats. Shiv Sena followed with 13 seats, the Congress secured one, while parties registered with the State Election Commission (SEC), particularly the AIMIM, won a combined 33 seats.

According to the final tally, the BJP emerged on top with 1,425 seats, followed by Shiv Sena with 399, Congress with 324, NCP with 167, Shiv Sena (UBT) with 155, NCP (SP) with 36, MNS with 13 and BSP with six. Parties registered with the SEC won 129 seats, unrecognised parties secured 196 seats, and 19 independents were elected.

Elections were held across 29 municipal corporations, including Mumbai, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Navi Mumbai, Vasai-Virar, Kalyan-Dombivli, Kolhapur, Nagpur, Solapur, Amravati, Akola, Nashik, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, Ulhasnagar, Thane, Chandrapur, Parbhani, Mira-Bhayandar, Nanded-Waghala, Panvel, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Latur, Malegaon, Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad, Jalgaon, Ahilyanagar, Dhule, Jalna and Ichalkaranji.
