New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Friday approved an estimated expenditure of ₹17,583 crore for the 2026–27 financial year during a special meeting, with projected revenue pegged at around ₹18,000 crore. Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh described it as the corporation’s “largest ever” budget.

Sanitation received the highest allocation at ₹4,797.78 crore, followed by ₹3,548.63 crore for general administration and ₹3,264.84 crore for education. Public health and medical relief were allotted ₹1,925.6 crore, while engineering works received ₹1,884.43 crore. The horticulture department was allocated ₹414.16 crore and the veterinary department ₹137 crore.

The budget provides full property tax exemption for residential ancestral houses up to 500 square metres in 49 fully rural villages, and for homes up to 200 square metres owned by original residents in urban villages. Additionally, a 15% rebate has been reinstated for group housing societies that pay property tax on time.

In a major welfare initiative, municipal councillors will be eligible for cashless treatment at CGHS rates in empanelled hospitals. MCD employees and pensioners living outside Delhi will also be able to avail treatment at CGHS hospitals nationwide. The civic body has approved a cashless treatment scheme for its officers and staff and plans to dedicate 250 new Ayushman Arogya Mandirs in partnership with the Delhi government.

To support women, ₹21,000 in financial assistance will be provided to 15 widows, single mothers, and persons with disabilities in each ward for their daughters’ marriages.

The budget also strengthens support for Residents’ Welfare Associations (RWAs), with 20 RWAs per ward set to receive ₹25,000 each for repair and maintenance work. Leader of the House Pravesh Wahi said funding for RWAs and NGOs managing parks has been increased from ₹8,000 to ₹13,500.

In sanitation and waste management, the corporation plans to procure 70 mechanical road sweeping machines and 1,000 litter picker machines, with four to be deployed in each ward.

An allocation of ₹22 crore has been made for repair and maintenance of municipal schools, and accident insurance coverage for municipal students is proposed to be doubled from ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh.

Addressing landfill clearance, Wahi said the Bhalswa and Okhla landfill sites are expected to be cleared by year-end, while the Ghazipur landfill is targeted for clearance by 2027. The mayor said the budget would play a vital role in making Delhi cleaner, stronger, and more prosperous.
