Galgotias University Asked to Vacate AI Summit

Authorities on Wednesday asked Galgotias University to vacate the AI Impact Summit Expo, alleging it had caused a “national embarrassment” by presenting a Chinese-made Unitree robodog as its own innovation, sources familiar with the matter said.

However, Professor Neha Singh of the university denied receiving any such directive. “We have not received any such direction. Galgotias University is a very responsible institution,” she said.

In a statement issued late Tuesday, the university said its faculty and students were deeply hurt by what it described as a “propaganda campaign” against the institution. It clarified that robotic programming forms part of its broader effort to train students in AI development and equip them with practical, real-world skills using globally available tools and technologies. Developing AI talent, it added, is the need of the hour.

The university emphasized that its vision centres on innovation and experiential learning. “We provide students access to modern technologies so they can gain hands-on experience and prepare for the future. Spreading negativity can harm the morale of students who are working hard to innovate and build skills using global technologies,” the statement said.

Galgotias robodog controversy

The row erupted after a video clip went viral in which Professor Singh introduced a robotic dog named “Orion,” saying it had been developed by the university’s Centre of Excellence. She described the robot as capable of surveillance and monitoring functions and said it could move freely across the campus.

Soon after, social media users alleged that the machine was actually sourced from Chinese robotics company Unitree Robotics.

University issues clarification

Following the backlash, the university released a clarification online, stating that it had never claimed to have manufactured the robodog.

“Galgotias has not built this robodog, nor have we claimed to do so,” the statement read. “What we are building are minds that will soon design, engineer, and manufacture such technologies here in Bharat.”

What is a Unitree robodog?

Robodogs made by Unitree Robotics are advanced four-legged robots designed to move like real animals while performing a range of tasks. These include navigating obstacles, conducting industrial inspections, surveillance, and even entertainment functions.

The China-based firm is known for offering these robotic systems at relatively lower prices and with wider accessibility compared to competitors such as Boston Dynamics, the maker of the robotic dog “Spot.”
