India marked its 77th Republic Day on Sunday, receiving warm greetings from leaders and diplomats across the globe. Among those extending wishes was Japan’s Ambassador to India, ONO Keiichi, who shared a personal note alongside the national celebrations.
Taking to social media platform X, the Japanese envoy posted a photograph of himself standing beside the Indian tricolour. In his message, Keiichi reflected on the significance of Republic Day and expressed his enthusiasm about participating in the official events in New Delhi.
“Warm wishes on the 77th Republic Day of India. Looking forward to joining the celebrations, with the At-Home invitation received from the Hon’ble President of India — a reminder of India’s rich and diverse culture. Happy Republic Day!” he wrote.
Significance of Republic Day
Republic Day is a landmark occasion in India’s national calendar, commemorating the adoption of the Constitution on January 26, 1950. The day symbolises the country’s transition into a sovereign republic.
The celebrations each year feature ceremonial events, cultural programmes and a grand parade that highlights India’s military prowess, cultural heritage and technological achievements.
Republic Day 2026 parade at Kartavya Path
The annual Republic Day parade will be held at Kartavya Path in New Delhi, beginning at 10.30 am and lasting approximately 90 minutes.
The proceedings will commence with Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting the National War Memorial to lay a wreath and lead the nation in paying homage to fallen soldiers. He will then proceed, along with other dignitaries, to the saluting dais at Kartavya Path to witness the parade.
Distinguished chief guests from Europe
Continuing the tradition of hosting international dignitaries, India will welcome prominent European leaders as chief guests this year. The President of the European Council, António Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, are set to attend the celebrations, reflecting India’s deepening engagement with the European Union.
