AAP leader Lucky Oberoi was shot dead in Punjab’s Jalandhar on Friday morning, police said. The incident occurred around 7:50 am as Oberoi was stepping out of the Model Town gurdwara after offering prayers.
According to information accessed by HT, two unidentified assailants arrived at the spot on a motorcycle and opened fire, discharging 8–10 rounds using two sophisticated weapons. Visuals from the scene showed shattered glass inside a black Thar SUV, believed to be Oberoi’s vehicle.
The AAP leader was rushed to a nearby hospital following the attack. However, Jalandhar Commissioner of Police Dhanpreet Kaur Randhawa later confirmed that Oberoi succumbed to his gunshot injuries.
Soon after news of his death emerged, the BJP targeted the AAP-led Punjab government over the state’s law and order situation. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonwalla, in a post on X, said, “Once again law and order in complete collapse in Punjab… AAP is Paap for Punjab.”
Police officials said an investigation into the killing is underway, and efforts are being made to identify and trace the attackers.
The killing comes weeks after another AAP leader, Jarmal Singh, was shot dead in Amritsar on January 4. Singh was attending a wedding when two unidentified assailants allegedly shot him at point-blank range.
A resident of Valthoa village and its sarpanch, Singh’s killing had prompted Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann to issue strict directions to the police to identify and arrest those responsible.
