A civilian employee posted at the Air Force Station in Chabua, Assam, was arrested on Sunday on charges of spying for Pakistan and allegedly passing on sensitive information to Pakistani handlers, according to Rajasthan Police.
The arrest was carried out in a joint operation by Rajasthan Intelligence and Air Force Intelligence, PTI reported, citing Additional Director General of Police (Intelligence) Prafulla Kumar.
How the arrest unfolded
The investigation began earlier this year after the arrest of another suspect, Jhabararam, in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer in January. During subsequent interrogation, officials uncovered links that pointed to the involvement of the accused, identified as Sumit Kumar (36).
Kumar, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, was working as a multi-tasking staff (MTS) at the Chabua Air Force Station. Using his position, he allegedly accessed sensitive information related to the base and shared it with Pakistani handlers through social media platforms.
Sharing information for money since 2023
During the probe, investigators found that Kumar had been in regular contact with Pakistani agents. He was detained in Chabua and later taken to Jaipur for detailed questioning.
During interrogation, Kumar reportedly admitted that he had been sharing classified information with Pakistan’s intelligence agency since 2023 in exchange for money.
The information he allegedly passed on included details about Air Force installations, locations of fighter aircraft, missile systems, and personnel-related data. He is also accused of assisting his handlers by creating social media accounts using mobile numbers registered in his name.
A case has been registered against him under relevant sections of the Official Secrets Act, 1923, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Further investigation is currently underway.
