An Air India flight and an IndiGo flight were involved in a minor ground collision on Tuesday evening at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. The incident took place when the wingtips of the two aircraft made contact while taxiing, officials said.
The collision occurred around 7.30 pm as Air India flight AI 2732, operating from Mumbai to Coimbatore, was pushing back from the bay for departure. At the same time, IndiGo flight 6E 791, which had arrived from Hyderabad, was taxiing towards the parking bay after landing.
Both aircraft involved were Airbus A320s. According to initial reports, the Air India aircraft was taxiing out while the IndiGo flight was taxiing in, when their right wingtips brushed against each other. Following the incident, both planes were immediately returned to their respective bays for inspection.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s (DGCA) Mumbai office was informed soon after the incident. Officials reached the spot and initiated a probe into the circumstances that led to the collision.
In a statement, an Air India spokesperson confirmed the incident, saying flight AI 2732 was delayed after the aircraft came into contact with another airline’s aircraft while waiting on the taxiway prior to take-off. “The wingtips of the two aircraft made contact, resulting in damage to our aircraft’s wingtip,” the spokesperson said.
As a precautionary measure, the aircraft was grounded for further technical checks. “All passengers have safely disembarked, and our ground teams are making alternative arrangements to fly them to their destination at the earliest. The incident has been reported to the regulator,” the spokesperson added.
IndiGo also acknowledged the incident, confirming that all passengers onboard flight 6E 791 were safe. “All passengers disembarked after parking. The aircraft is undergoing maintenance inspections. In line with established protocols, the relevant authorities were promptly informed and the matter is being investigated,” an IndiGo spokesperson said.
