India Withdraws Diplomats’ Families from Bangladesh

India on Tuesday decided to withdraw the families of its officials posted in Bangladesh due to security concerns, news agency PTI reported. The move comes just weeks before Bangladesh is scheduled to hold parliamentary elections.

Official sources told PTI that, as a precautionary measure in view of the prevailing security situation, dependents of Indian officials stationed at the High Commission and other diplomatic posts in Bangladesh have been advised to return to India. The sources added that India’s mission and all diplomatic posts in the country will continue to function normally.

India maintains a High Commission in Dhaka and has additional diplomatic posts in Chattogram, Khulna, Rajshahi and Sylhet.

PTI also reported that India has designated Bangladesh as a “non-family” posting for Indian diplomats and officials, citing safety concerns following a rise in extremist activities in the neighbouring country.

India has repeatedly voiced concerns over attacks on minorities, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh.

Bilateral relations have been under strain since the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus assumed office after the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina government in August 2024. Pakistan is already designated as a “non-family” destination for Indian diplomats and officials.
