Opposition MPs Protest India–US Interim Trade Deal Outside Parliament
Opposition Members of Parliament on Thursday staged a protest at Makar Dwar in Parliament, New Delhi, against the India–US interim trade agreement.
Carrying placards, the MPs termed the agreement a “trap deal” and accused the central government of compromising national interests. The demonstration took place during the ongoing Budget Session, where sharp exchanges between the government and the opposition over the trade pact have intensified.
Rahul Gandhi Targets Government Over Trade Pact
Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi has been vocal in his criticism of the India–US trade deal. Addressing the Lok Sabha during the Budget Session on Wednesday, he attacked the government over both the interim trade agreement and the 2026–27 Union Budget.
Gandhi alleged that the government had weakened India’s negotiating position and warned against allowing foreign powers to dictate terms. He framed India’s strength in global negotiations around its people and data, calling Indian data one of the most valuable geopolitical assets of the 21st century.
“In a contest between the United States and China, the single most valuable asset is Indian data. If the Americans want to remain a superpower and protect their dollar, the key to that is Indian data,” he said. His remarks triggered protests from treasury benches, with some members warning of a possible privilege notice.
Backing for Nationwide Strike
The opposition also expressed support for the Bharat Bandh called by various trade unions. Workers and farmers across the country participated in the strike, protesting against the Centre’s policies.
Protesters raised concerns over labour codes, trade agreements, privatisation, and other economic measures, which they described as anti-worker and anti-farmer.
A day earlier, Rahul Gandhi had argued that the global order is undergoing major shifts, with increasing geopolitical tensions and the weaponisation of energy and finance. While the government has acknowledged these global challenges, Gandhi alleged that it has allowed the United States to leverage energy and financial systems in ways that could adversely affect India.
Meanwhile, Congress MP Manish Tewari moved an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha seeking a discussion on what he described as key issues, including the India–US interim trade agreement and the joint statement issued by both countries.
