Narendra Modi congratulated Team India after their historic victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final against New Zealand national cricket team, calling the triumph a reflection of the team’s “exceptional skills, determination and teamwork.”
India defeated New Zealand by a massive 96 runs on Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, becoming the first team to successfully defend the men’s T20 World Cup title.
Congratulating the team in a post on X, the Prime Minister wrote:
“Congratulations to the Indian team on winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup! This remarkable triumph reflects exceptional skills, determination and teamwork. They have shown outstanding grit throughout the tournament. This victory has filled every Indian heart with pride and joy.”
India create history with back-to-back T20 titles
The Men in Blue delivered a dominant performance in the final, defeating New Zealand to secure their second consecutive T20 World Cup crown. With the 2026 victory, India became the first team to win back-to-back T20 World Cups and the first to lift the trophy on home soil. The triumph also made India three-time T20 world champions.
Batting first, India’s top order unleashed a powerful display against a struggling New Zealand bowling attack. Three Indian batters scored half-centuries as the hosts posted a massive total of 255/5, the highest score ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final.
The bowlers then sealed the victory in commanding fashion, preventing New Zealand from building any momentum. The Kiwi side was bowled out for 159 runs with one over remaining, handing India a crushing 96-run victory, the biggest winning margin in the history of a T20 World Cup final.
