An ownership change has brought Royal Challengers Bengaluru back into the spotlight, raising a key question among fans: will the team retain its identity or undergo a rebranding?

The Bengaluru-based franchise has been acquired by a consortium led by the Aditya Birla Group, alongside US-based investor David Blitzer, private equity firm Blackstone, and The Times of India. The deal, valued at USD 1.78 billion (around ₹16,706 crore), marks the most expensive franchise sale in Indian Premier League history.

The stake was purchased from United Spirits Limited, which previously owned the team through Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited (RCSPL).

Amid the buzz, speculation about a possible name change quickly gained traction. However, a recent Instagram story by Ananya Birla appears to have put those rumors to rest. She reshared a post संकेत that the franchise’s name will remain unchanged, suggesting brand continuity despite the ownership transition.

This deal represents a major milestone for the IPL, as RCB continues to expand its commercial footprint and on-field success. The acquisition includes both the men’s and women’s teams.

The four-member consortium has signed a definitive agreement with United Spirits Limited (USL), a subsidiary of Diageo, to acquire a 100% stake in the franchise.

Earlier reports suggested the sellers were targeting a valuation of around USD 2 billion. While the final deal stands slightly lower at USD 1.78 billion, it closely matches expectations as negotiations move toward completion.

RCB, which secured its maiden IPL title last season, has attracted strong interest from global investors eager to capitalize on the league’s growing commercial appeal. The franchise also celebrated success in the Women’s Premier League, winning their second title this year.
