Shreyas Iyer has been fined ₹12 lakh after the Punjab Kings captain was found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate during their IPL 2026 clash against Gujarat Titans in New Chandigarh on Tuesday.
Despite Punjab Kings securing a thrilling three-wicket win over the 2022 champions, Iyer faced disciplinary action from the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The match saw PBKS overcome a middle-order collapse to register their first win of the season, although Iyer also had a minor injury scare during the game.
In an official statement, the IPL said that Iyer was penalized for his team’s slow over-rate during Match No. 4 at the New International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh. As it was PBKS’s first offence under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate violations, the captain was fined ₹12 lakh.
This is not the first time Iyer has faced such action. During the previous season, he was penalized twice for similar offences — initially fined ₹12 lakh, followed by a steeper ₹24 lakh fine for a repeat breach.
On the field, Punjab Kings had to dig deep to secure the win. After restricting Gujarat Titans to 162, PBKS appeared comfortable during the chase, with Prabhsimran Singh and Cooper Connolly putting together a solid 77-run partnership for the second wicket. However, a sudden collapse saw the team slip from 110/2 to 118/6, bringing Gujarat back into the contest.
Connolly, however, held his nerve brilliantly. The young Australian remained unbeaten on 72 off 44 balls and guided Punjab home with crucial support from Xavier Bartlett, earning the Player of the Match award.
Gujarat Titans had their moments, especially through Prasidh Krishna, who was introduced late by captain Shubman Gill. The pacer delivered a stunning spell, claiming three wickets for just three runs in 10 deliveries, triggering a dramatic collapse in the PBKS innings.
Earlier, Gujarat got off to a strong start with Gill leading the charge. He, along with Sai Sudharsan, added 37 runs before Marco Jansen struck. Gill went on to score 39, while Jos Buttler contributed 38, and the duo stitched a 46-run partnership.
However, Punjab’s bowlers pulled things back effectively. Yuzvendra Chahal applied pressure in the middle overs, while Vijaykumar Vyshak impressed with his variations. Jansen also delivered an economical spell, conceding just 20 runs in four overs.
In the end, Gujarat managed only 34 runs in the last five overs, finishing with a total that proved insufficient as Punjab Kings held their nerve to clinch a hard-fought victory.
