BMC Mayor Row: Hotel Stays, Bargains, and Jail Jibes as Mumbai’s Civic Chessboard Shifts

The contest for the mayor’s chair in India’s wealthiest civic body has revived familiar Maharashtra political dramas—hotel rooms, razor-thin margins, and sharp verbal sparring—after the BJP–Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) alliance narrowly crossed the majority mark in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.

At the centre of the maneuvering is Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who on Sunday night met his party’s 29 newly elected corporators, mostly first-timers, at Taj Land’s End in Bandra. Declaring a Mahayuti mayor a foregone conclusion, Shinde said neighbouring civic bodies such as Kalyan-Dombivli would follow suit.

Why the hotel stay?
The Shinde faction calls it a three-day orientation for new corporators before formal registration with the Konkan divisional commissioner. Critics, however, see it as a move to prevent last-minute defections.

The BJP emerged as the single-largest party with 89 seats in the 227-member House, while Shinde’s Sena added 29, bringing the Mahayuti tally to 118—just four above the halfway mark of 114. With such tight margins, even minor cross-voting could upset plans.

Bargaining claims and the ‘jail’ jab
Opposition Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders allege the hotel huddle masks bargaining over the mayor’s post. MP Sanjay Raut escalated the rhetoric, calling the Taj a “jail” and demanding corporators’ “release,” suggesting Shinde fears losing them.

Shinde dismissed the claims, calling his party “fearless” and hinting that some opposition corporators might become “untraceable” on voting day. Industry minister Uday Samant echoed the warning, hinting at possible abstentions or cross-voting.

The mayoral math
The mayor is elected by corporators, with the ruling bloc selecting the office-holder. While Mahayuti surpasses the halfway mark, the narrow cushion keeps nerves frayed. A united opposition front would still fall short, but only slightly.

The Shinde faction emphasizes that the election was fought as an alliance and points to the symbolic weight of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray’s upcoming birth centenary year.

BJP introspection and Uddhav’s opening
The BJP fell short of its ambitious targets, finishing with 89 seats after seat-sharing adjustments with Shinde’s Sena. Party leaders cite coordination gaps, candidate selection, and the opposition’s “Marathi manoos” appeal for the modest showing.

Meanwhile, Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray keeps the door ajar, saying his party could still have a mayor “if God is willing”—a comment that drew a light-hearted response from CM Devendra Fadnavis. Opposition voices note that a united Sena could have outpolled the BJP, but for now, arithmetic and the hotel strategy favour the Mahayuti.
