The Congress on Saturday targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi following US President Donald Trump’s strong remarks in support of Pakistan amid its conflict with Afghanistan, calling it yet another setback for India’s foreign policy.
Congress general secretary (communications) Jairam Ramesh said Trump’s “full-throated” backing of Pakistan reflects poorly on what he termed India’s “huglomacy.” In a post on X, Ramesh alleged that the US president once again praised Pakistan’s leadership, including Army Chief General Asim Munir — whose earlier provocative comments, he claimed, had set the backdrop for the April 22, 2025 terrorist attack in Pahalgam that India attributes to Pakistan.
Ramesh also criticized the Centre’s economic diplomacy with Washington, arguing that India had conceded too much in a recent trade agreement. He claimed New Delhi made firm commitments — particularly regarding imports from American farmers — while the US offered only vague assurances on expanding market access for Indian exports.
He further pointed out that shortly after the deal, the US imposed a 125.87 per cent import duty on Indian solar modules, describing it as evidence of a failed economic strategy.
On the strategic front, Ramesh said India’s diplomacy had suffered repeated setbacks, accusing Trump of drawing closer to Pakistan and reviving what he described as the “hyphenation” of India and Pakistan in US foreign policy.
“The prime minister may manage to secure awards through his channels, but the reality is that the self-proclaimed Vishwaguru stands exposed. The world, particularly the US, has taken his measure,” Ramesh said.
The Congress leader’s remarks came after Trump, responding to a question about tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, said he shares a very good relationship with Pakistan and praised its leadership. “You have a great prime minister, you have a great general there. Two people that I respect a lot. Pakistan is doing terrifically well,” Trump said, adding that he would consider intervening if necessary.
